Underground Storage Tank Management

SynTerra provides a wide range of services related to the management of underground storage tank (UST) systems. Our engineers, hydrogeologists, and scientists have extensive experience with UST projects and overall UST program management.

UST Abandonment/Closure

SynTerra staff has managed the closure of over 100 petroleum or hazardous waste UST's. The services available include planning and design of the closure, regulatory coordination, observation and documentation of closure, coordination of story analysis, and closure reports meeting the requirements of both state and local agencies. SynTerra coordinates with contractors to ensure proper permitting and certifications are obtained for the disposal of tanks, piping, dispensers, soil, and water associated with the closure.

Site Assessments

SynTerra specializes in timely cost-effective soil and groundwater assessments to prepare sites for remediation. Registered professionals perform and review the development of site data, the installation of borings and monitoring wells, and the analysis and reporting of site constituents as may be required by oversight agencies. Reports are generated to satisfy the regulatory process as well as to determine the need for remedial action at a site.

Site Remediation

Should a site require soil or groundwater remediation, SynTerra provides analysis of site parameters, design and installation of remedial systems, and evaluation of the efficiency of the remediation effort. SynTerra meets client objectives while satisfying regulatory requirements with the minimum investment in time and money. SynTerra prides itself on maintaining positive relationships to develop win-win solutions to satisfy environmental projects.

Regulatory Compliance and Trust Fund Activities

Synterra is an proven contractor under the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) State Underground Petroleum Environmental Response Bank (SUPERB) program. SynTerra also maintains regular communication with regulatory agencies at the state and local levels. We are able to provide technical opinions on the applicability of new and existing regulations related to USTs. We also coordinate direct billing and reimbursement for assessment activities under state trust fund procedures, including the processing of invoices and supplying documentation in support of the funds requests.

UST Planning and Management

The Federal and state requirements for upgrading USTs have specific deadlines for the provision of monitoring, inventory control and corrosion protection of new and existing tanks. Some agencies have in place regulations enabling the use of above ground tanks (ASTs) in lieu of USTs. SynTerra can provide assistance in planning for the future and avoiding actions and decisions which could be costly and badly timed as regulatory changes take place.
