Honor for SynTerra engineer
Campoli receives prestigious Ground Control in Mining Award.

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) announced that Dr. Al Campoli of SynTerra is the 2019 recipient of the Syd S. and Felicia F. Peng Ground Control in Mining Award. Campoli, the Geotechnical Engineering Group Leader at Synterra, will be recognized as the award recipient February 26 during the SME 2020 Annual Conference and Expo in Phoenix, Arizona.
The award recognizes technical and scientific excellence in advancing the understanding of ground control technologies or approaches by publication or direct applications in the mining industry. This citation accompanied the SME announcement: “For more than 30 years, Al Campoli has consistently contributed to an improved understanding of a wide variety of ground control problems and their innovative solutions.”
Campoli, Ph.D., is a leading expert in rock reinforcement, standing support, groundwater containment, and ventilation issues related to tunneling, mining, and construction. He has taught mineral economics and mine valuation courses at the University of Kentucky and is the author of more than 40 articles that have appeared in technical publications.
Based out of SynTerra’s Lexington, Ky., office, Campoli is a licensed Professional Engineer in Alabama, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, Utah, and West Virginia.
